NOT A FAIRY STORY (A TRUE STORY)

Donna - the loyal little kitten

Once upon a time there lived a colony of cats in a cosy old barn in Rabat. A colony is like a village where there are whole families living together – Grandparent cats, Mother cats, Father cats and kittens.

One day, a big black roaring monster (a bulldozer) arrived and smashed down their home. All the cats escaped to safety except two special little kittens too frightened to move.

This saved their lives for they stayed huddled together in their little hole under a stone, which protected them.

One was called Serena, a pretty grey/cream female kitten who was blind from birth and the other Tiny Tim, a ginger kitten, born with only 3 feet.

As the hours passed, they huddled together for warmth and comfort without food and water thinking they had been deserted.

But they had not been forgotten as Tiny’s big sister, Donna, knew they were still trapped under the rubble and stood nearby refusing to move until her cries for help were noticed!

Two days after being buried alive Serena and Tiny Tim were lifted to safety and all went to live with a kind new owner.

Serena who, although blind, with a little help from her new owner (who helped her feel her way by touching the walls) very quickly learned to use her other senses - touch, smell, hearing and taste. Sound toys were important such as a jingly ball which she was able to find easily.

Upon their arrival Donna, Serena and Tiny lived in a bathroom where they felt cosy and safe. Their owner built their confidence by spending time playing games and cuddling them. Both Serena and Tiny lacked confidence jumping up so a small foot stool was invaluable. Donna remained the ‘mother figure’ offering comfort.

Serena quickly became a very close and loving companion and after a short time, easily found her way around her owner’s home (learning about one room at a time) but which had a secure walled and netted back yard. The cats didn’t bother neighbours and they were SAFE.

Tiny Tim remained close to his sister and while still young, was helped to overcome his special needs (a missing back foot) by being offered a small ramp to help him to climb. Tiny quickly became as strong and agile as the others.

As for Donna, the pretty Tal Madonna, she remains the caring older sister who still watches over her little brother Tiny. They all lived happily ever after as contented neutered ‘home cats’. The End

HOMES WANTED URGENTLY for hand reared young cats RING 9921 9815 PLEASE OPEN YOUR HEARTS AND YOUR HOMES!

Please help us to find good loving family homes for 10 beautiful friendly cats rescued by myself and others during the past year, as I can no longer keep them all in my small flat. I work in schools teaching animal awareness so it’s important I find only good homes.

These felines who are healthy, litter trained, vaccinated and neutered were all rescued as kittens, but unable to be re-homed as kittens for various reasons. Meanwhile, I must confess, I also fell in love with them!

There are some of every colour and size including a beautiful silky grey/white long haired very loving male called GIZMO and his sister SIMBA a big fluffy tiger striped cuddly tabby with white bib and paws, who were found as tiny starving kittens. As I type this, Simba is sitting on my lap purring. It breaks my heart parting with them but I cannot keep so many as I have four other animals of my own. They are used to living in a flat with a yard and climbing area covered with net for safety, since the streets can be dangerous places for cats.

Did you know that animals give us unconditional love and longevity, but cats in particular make ideal companions for anyone reaching their autumn years, even in a flat, needing no exercise! Research shows that stroking an animal slows down our heart rate and relaxes our body naturally (without drugs) whilst offering warmth, love and companionship.

If we cannot find good homes, the alternative for these cats will be releasing them into the community. Since these are home reared cats, a family home would be best.

Serena, our blind cat, pictured above playing football with a walnut which she kicks around happily following it using sound and vibration. Due to sight impairment from birth, her others senses are more highly developed so she manages just fine living indoors.

She was rescued from the ruins of a bulldozed house in Rabat. Although vets said she was blind and wanted to remove her eyeballs to avoid infection, we would not allow this as we were sure she could see something if only light and dark. We have watched her tracking light as she moves her head following a crystal with sun reflecting through it. She can also see the reflection from a glass door so she loves to sit and stare at the glass - fascinated. We believe the quality of her life is good and Serena makes a very loving and appreciate home cat who knows her way around a flat extremely well including jumping up and down from chairs and tables. Serena has integrated successfully with another 12 cats and a small dog who is her best friend.

CIRCLE OF LIFE

What is the ‘Circle or Life’ and why do we need to live in harmony and show respect to all living beings who share this earth?

We have a saying in the English language: ‘What goes around comes around’ or ‘Do unto others as you would have done to you’. The Native Americans believe ‘Everything’s a circle. We’re each responsible for our own actions. It will come back’ Native American Betty Laverdure

There is also a native American prayer: Teach us Love, Compassion and Honour that we may heal the earth and heal each other.

Many educated people now understand these words of wisdom recorded so many years ago, since through showing lack of respect for each other and our natural environment, we are in fact polluting and destroying the earth and all living beings .

Respect for nature

The Native Americans were deeply spiritual and from birth to death revered their surroundings and strived to live in harmony with nature, communing directly with the Creator of all life. They believed being born on this earth was a very sacred trust and responsibility because of the special gifts given such as plant life, fish, woodlands, birds and other living beings on earth. They also believed they could never ‘own’ land during our short lives on earth; acting only as caretakers for the next generation. They respected wild life and only ever hunted for food, clothing and shelter never killing animals for sport

Natural healing

Native Indians were also very ‘in tune’ with nature. ‘Once you have heard the meadowlark and caught the scent of fresh plowed earth, peace cannot escape you’. Sequiche.

Training began with children who were taught to sit still and enjoy it. They were taught to use all their senses to smell, to look where there was apparently nothing to see, and to listen intently when all seemingly was quiet.

Positive thinking

There is a proverb ‘Where there is no vision or purpose – the people perish’

Many supposedly ‘new age’ neuro linguistic programming philosophies are not new at all e.g. ‘Positive talk creates positive outcomes’.

The Navajo Indians even had their version: ‘You create what you speak about’

ShareMalta

ShareMalta’s vision, through education of the younger generation, is for a peaceful world where each one of us respects and cares about ourselves, our family, neighbours and all living beings on this earth including all of God’s creatures, including trees, fish and birds. If we need to breed and kill them for food then we do with the least suffering, but never to abuse or kill helpless birds and animals just for sport. ‘There for the grace of God go I’. We are animals too remember.

We should listen to the ancient words of wisdom from our ancestors, the Native Indians and create a positive vision for the future and live in harmony with each other, animals and nature on beautiful planet earth.
